One of the aspects of the Darwin Festival that differentiates it from others is its cross-cultural music collaborations. The festival's artistic director Malcolm Blaylock explains, "This region's abundance of quality Indigenous talent and our creative connections with the Asia Pacific and the rest of Australia provides the Darwin Festival with an unequivocal creative distinction".
Consequently, the festival features a plethora of unique performances: renowned Aboriginal singer Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu teams up with East Timorese singer/songwriter Ego Lemos, the critically acclaimed Crossing Roper Bar concert represents a musical collaboration between members of the Australian Art Orchestra and musicians from Ngukkurr while Tanah Merege showcases the combined efforts of Indigenous and Indonesian musicians.
On top of this, the festival features musical performances from current Triple J darlings such as Holly Throsby and Ash Grunwald as well as the all-star, multi-faceted female vocal talent that is Broad. Attendees can also explore the large and diverse visual arts program devised for the festival, with bus tours showcasing the multitude of galleries exhibiting Indigenous art in the Top End.
